<itunes:summary>The other day, someone asked me what it's like to be a work at home mom. I just blinked back at him, my mind blank. How could I possibly describe life as a work at home mom? Only someone who's lived it can understand the juggling act it requires.

Work at home moms have the usual responsibilities of being a mom - folding laundry, scheduling doctor's appointments, helping with homework, reading bedtime stories, and basically being on call 24-hours a day. In addition, there is the conundrum of how to find time to work and answer emails, do networking, update bookkeeping, make phone calls, and more. And, it must fit into a 24 hour day. So, how do we do it? How do we stay sane in the chaos?

It's disclaimer time. I am not the person to give advice on sanity. I'm pretty sure I filed away my sanity last year when I did taxes. I have my days where I say "That's it! I'm getting a regular job!" But, then I talk to my wonderful friend who reminds me of the reality of the real world - the traffic, the boss who won't let me go to my son's field trip, and the fact that I'd probably have to buy pantyhose again. She manages to slap some sense back into me every time. I hate pantyhose.

Working from home the last few years, I've picked up a few handy tips. They aren't magic beans, that, when planted, will grow you a nanny and a housekeeper, but they can help you to enjoy being a work at home mom just a little bit more.

10. Freezer Cooking! This is my personal life-saver. Spend one day during the week or one day each month assembling meals and your reward is a freezer filled with food. Then, when it's time to make dinner, just grab a healthful, inexpensive meal from your freezer, heat it up and serve. Think about it. Next time you cook dinner, quadruple the recipe and put what you don't eat into the freezer for later. Presto! Magic food will appear in your freezer the next time you need it.

9. Pay it Forward- By helping others, it reminds us that many of our own problems are much smaller than they appear. Whether you donate money, give blood, or volunteer your time, you are setting a beautiful example for your children. Involve your older kids and make volunteering a family activity.

8. Stay Healthy - Dust off your rollerblades, strap a pillow across your bottom and hit the pavement. Or surprise your children and the dog with a nice long walk.

7. Organize, organize, organize! If you're spending hours each week sorting through piles of paper, looking for receipts or "to do" lists, that is wasted time and unnecessary frustration. Sweep the Magic 8 ball, the empty jar of peanuts, the Slinky, and the Snickers wrapper off your desk right now. You can do it!

6. Save Money - As Benjamin Franklin wrote in Poor Richard's Almanac "A penny saved is a penny earned." Work at home moms know how hard it can be to earn a penny. So, do everything you can to save those hard-earned cents.

5. Time Management - Don't let Time Stealers make you work any longer than you need to. When you're sitting in front of your computer or talking on the phone, that is time away from your children. Always remember your "why". WHY are you working from home? If the reason is to spend more time with your kids, then figure out how to make that happen!

4. Learn and Learn some More! - Find a mentor or someone who you like the way they handle their business. Network with other moms who are successful, take online classes, or hire a coach. Invest in yourself and you'll invest in your business.

3. Play with your Kids - Whether you sit down to play a board game, or drive Hot Wheels around the carpet, there's always fun to be had. If you need some ideas, check out http://www.ShowKidsTheFun.com

2. Keep your sense of humor. Laugh every day! Turn off your computer, put in your copy of The Village People "YMCA" (I know you have one) and Dance! Dance! Dance!

And the number one way to stay sane as a Work at Home Mom .....

1. Always remember "The days are lo</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>I have a confession.

I'm a mostly-sane WAHM. I'm far from the lsquo;got it together' work at home mom that I'd like to be.

I believe that there are a lot of women out there like me - clutching onto your sanity while juggling family, daily work requirements, basketball practice, ballet recitals, PTA meetings, and the many other responsibilities we carry on our shoulders.

If you've been a WAHM for more than a minute, you know the predicament we face. We chose to work from home so we could spend more time with our children. This is great in theory. What happens, though is that we end up with no scheduled and defined work time, so it becomes a struggle to find time to spend with our kids. When you hear other people say "It must be so nice to work from home so you can spend time with your kids all day", you roll on the floor laughing. If only it were so simple! Finding the balance between work and home can be a constant struggle especially when work IS home.

I remember the days when I worked out of the home in an office job. I had two separate and distinct compartments in my life. There was the office, where I could work in peace and quiet, focus on projects and be productive. And, then there was home, where I was able to focus on my children and have fun. I had scheduled working hours, and also distinct family time.

Now, I have the lsquo;hom-ffice', an odd melding of home and office. The line between the two compartments is unclear. My office is now an extension of home. And, home is becoming an extension of my office.

Because of this dilemma, I find that I've got the focus of a gnat. Here's how my work day goes.

I wake up, grab a cup of coffee, and sit in front of the computer to check my email. Fifty new messages. No problem. I get ready to tackle the first one.

"Dear Nicole, I was wondering if you might be interested in" ...

"juice in a sippy cup, pretty please my pretty mommy?"

Whoa!! Ok, brain switch! I turn and look at my little girl who just crawled out of bed. She is a perfect picture of childhood, with her big brown eyes, sweaty wildly curly hair and big grin. I hug this rosy-cheeked angel and go to the kitchen to get juice. Then, I sit back down and attempt to read my email

"Dear Nicole, I was wondering if you might be interested in my new affiliate program selling" ...

"the new Lego robot I built!"

Brain switch again. I swivel my office chair and see my son, his blue eyes twinkling, and his face beaming proudly, holding up his Lego creation. I lsquo;ooh' and lsquo;ahhh' over the new Lego invention -- a robot that can climb walls. I rub his blonde head and tell him how wildly creative he is. He grins and goes back to Lego-building.

I swivel back to work, and try to get as much done as I can between the many interruptions, karate practice, dinner and bedtime stories. Oftentimes, late at night, you can find me working, while watching late night TV shows. My husband comes in to check on me. I swivel my chair to get my good-night kiss and I tell him that I just want to wrap up a few last projects. I stagger to bed late at night only to start again, before the kids wake up in the morning.

Are you seeing the pattern? Is there any wonder that I'm mostly-sane? Look at your own days and I'll bet they are very similar to mine.

Despite the frazzled hours and days, and all the distractions, I love being a WAHM. The honest truth is that I wouldn't trade my job for any corporate job in America.

However, as I meet more and more work at home moms, it's becoming apparent that I'm not alone in my struggles. Other moms are setting expectations that are just not matching reality. What can we do about it?

1. Reclaim your office:

If you have one room that you can dedicate to your work, stake your claim on it. Clear out all toys and non-work items. Make your "hom-ffice" a real office. No more messing around with half a commitment to your business. Your office is your turf. Protect it....</itunes:summary>

Today I was asking "Why work from home" in a slightly different tone. Today, I am home with a sick puppy and am up to my eyeballs in puppy puke.

I'm new to this puppy thing. I was warned up and down about how much work a puppy is, and I thought "I have two children. How hard can a puppy possibly be?!" Well, one difference is that newborn babies aren't born with fangs --

at least mine weren't. So, in between changing the gauze patches on my shredded arms (those teeth are sharp!), and hours of puppy school, I fell in love with this furry beast. He was added to my list of "Why's".

So, today, while I was composing my work at home mom newsletter, in the background I hear my furr-ball start to vomit -- again. The thought that ran through my mind initially was not a happy "Why". It was more like:

* "WHY in the world am I home to deal with this while my husband gets to sit in a quiet office all day?"
* "WHY isn't HE dealing with cleaning up the 8th pile of yucky stuff?"
* "WHY don't I get any peace and quiet while I work?!"

After I cleaned up the puppy, rubbed his head and got him clean blankets, threw in another load of laundry, and climbed into bed with my sick 7 year old and my 3 year old to read stories, I had time to collect my thoughts. A little bit (ok, a LOT) of puppy puke was sure worth it.

And, later, when I made my phone call to my husband to tell him about our day, it wasn't the puppy-puke I was telling him about....

I told him how our daughter said that she wanted to plant some jelly beans to grow a jelly bean tree. And, how the kids were playing the game of Life and I overheard their rules. They decided that the person who got the most parents
into the car won. That's why I stay at home.

And, if a furry little tail starts wagging when I walk into the room? Well, that's sure an added bonus.

So, the next time your warm and loving "Why" turns into a plea for help, take a deep breath and think of all the memories you would be missing -- both good and not-so-good, if you weren't a work at home mom.

<itunes:summary>Every once in a while I am reminded that working from home is a dream come true. Sometimes it's a subtle reminder - a hug from my daughter or a bike ride with my son. Other times it just takes my breath away.

A few days ago, I had a reminder that took my breath away. My husband and I were standing on a beach on the Gulf of Mexico, a few miles from our home. It was our weekly brainstorming session. Once each week, we drop off the kids at school, buy a latte and plan our workweek. This week, we decided to meet at the beach.

We talked and drank our coffee, enjoying the salt air and the sounds of the waves crashing near us. I had my shoes off, and was enjoying the feel of the perfect white sand. Butterflies danced around us, and my hair kept blowing in my face. It was the perfect day.

One of the items on our agenda was the design of a new website. My husband smiled as he excitedly described what he had planned. I looked back at him, not quite understanding.

He picked up a stick, sat down and began drawing in the sand. First, a rectangle, then more lines and arrows as a website took shape. He talked and squinted up at me, looking for my approval. I took the stick from him and drew another rectangle next to his, offering ideas of my own.

We sketched and debated different layouts and the benefits of each decision on Search Engines and ease of navigation.

After we had created a row of rectangles down the beach, I smiled at our progress pleased that we had come to an agreement.

The meeting over, we held hands and walked away, while the waves washed away all evidence of our meeting.

My husband paused and said "This is what working at home is all about."

I agreed.
